Itinerary
Il percorso
We embark on a captivating journey along the enchanting west coast of Sardinia, specifically Su Pallosu and Sa Rocca Tunda. Our adventure will reveal the rugged beauty of Su Pallosu's beaches, characterized by their unique blend of sandstone and fossilized sands, masterfully sculpted by the relentless forces of wind and sea.

The islet of the seagulls, situated near Su Pallosu's beach, proudly showcases the blooms of wild garlic, known as allium sativum. These hardy flowers thrive in the hot rocky terrain, imparting a distinct fragrance of garlic and honey to the surroundings.

We will follow a scenic path along Su Pallosu's beach, offering panoramic views of the Montiferru mountains. Interestingly, just half a century ago, this area was dotted with sedge huts, which have now yielded to the encroaching sea. The entire Su Pallosu coastline is undergoing vital environmental restoration, supported by European funds. This significant environmental engineering effort aims to combat coastal erosion and restrain the sea's gradual advance inland.

En route, we'll encounter the Pauli Marigosa pond, a haven for bird-watching enthusiasts. This pond is particularly fascinating, attracting various protected species such as black-winged stilts, herons, and flamingos, each contributing to its rich faunal value.

Our journey will take us past pristine beaches until we reach Sa Rocca Tunda. Here, you'll have the opportunity for a refreshing swim or a peaceful moment of relaxation. A walk to the Spanish tower awaits us, and along the way, in a unique spot, you'll find a scarab carving etched into the rock—an intriguing destination.

Sa Rocca Tunda is a lesser-known but extraordinary place. Few are aware that the hills of Su Crastu Biancu, near the beach, conceal the domus de janas, or "fairy houses." These remarkable and enigmatic archaeological monuments, typical of Sardinia, remain unexplored despite the knowledge of their existence.

Our adventure continues adjacent to the domus de janas, leading toward the coast, where you'll encounter an Egyptian-style scarab. Numerous theories abound about its origin, ranging from playful hoaxes to potential connections with Egypt, given the presence of scarabs in the tombs of Tharros, an ancient Sinis city.

The scarab held profound significance for the Egyptians, symbolizing prosperity, fertility, and the protection of the gods. It's not inconceivable to imagine contact or even collaboration between the Nuragic civilization and the Egyptian one during the time of Ramses II and his army of Shardana.

Upon reaching the Spanish tower, constructed in 1580 as a defense against the Ottoman Empire, you'll be treated to the splendid beauty of the Is Arenas pine forest. On clear days, the panoramic vista encompasses the entire west coast, stretching as far as Bosa and Alghero.

In the vicinity, there's a "Peschiera," a pond linked to the sea, where you can catch and enjoy freshly caught fish on the spot. This cooperative-managed spot offers an excellent alternative for group outings, allowing you to savor freshly roasted fish. Near the fishpond lies a wreck, likely of Roman origin, occasionally revealed by the receding tide.

Our return journey follows a circular route, but the adventure is far from over. It's time to unwind, and we'll arrange a delightful evening picnic on the beach featuring sausages, carasau bread, Sardinian cheese, and, of course, fine wine. Evenings and sunsets hold a magical allure on the West Coast, making it a perfect setting for farewells and a tranquil journey back home.
